What I Really Do After Surgery

I’ve been asked more than once what I do after a long surgical day…if I go out, unwind with a fancy dinner, or maybe even hit a dance floor somewhere.

Let me be very clear: Absolutely not.

If you know me, you know I don’t dance. The only exception might be when social media demands it – and even then, it’s questionable at best. But I know it makes you laugh, and that’s what makes it worth it. But what I do love is heading home to the ranch, peeling off the compression socks, and stepping into my real life. And that’s where the magic happens.

From Operating Room to Reality TV

Once the last chart is signed and every post-op call is made, my favorite thing in the world is slipping into comfy clothes and turning on some reality TV. Right now, I’m loving Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making the Team – it’s got all the sparkle, discipline, and high kicks I could never pull off, and I’m absolutely hooked.

(There are a few other shows in the rotation too… but I’m going to plead the fifth until I’ve had a chance to delete my viewing history.)

Home Is Where the Herd Is

Life on the ranch keeps me grounded – and entertained. We’ve got horses, cows, donkeys, dogs, and a rotating collection of animals that somehow keep multiplying. It’s a beautiful kind of chaos, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Most recently, we welcomed a very sweet, domesticated bull who likes to nuzzle up a little closer than we’re used to. We’re all still getting used to that.

We’ve also been talking about adding ferrets…and maybe one day, a giraffe. Why not? Around here, anything’s possible.

Right now, we’re considering getting our daughter a pony. I’m raising her to be a good little cowgirl, and I love watching her grow up surrounded by open skies and creatures that teach her gentleness, courage, and care. It’s the best kind of childhood – and exactly the life I dreamed of giving her.

The Real Heart of It All

At the end of the day, I’m not thinking about lasers or surgery plans. I’m thinking about my family. My husband, our daughter, the animals, our home – those are the things that give me peace and remind me who I am.

But I’ll be honest – seeing my patients thrive fills my cup, too. Whether it’s a post-op photo, a little check-in message, or a smile I recognize in someone who finally feels like themselves again…that stays with me. That’s the part I carry home.

I love what I do with my whole heart. And I love having a life that lets me come home, reset, and laugh with the people (and creatures) I love most.

So no, you won’t find me dancing after surgery. But you might find me curled up with my daughter, checking on a post-op patient from the porch, or sneaking in one more episode of DCC before bed.

Because the best results happen when your surgeon is grounded, grateful, and exactly where she’s meant to be.

With love (and probably with Eduardo peeking over my shoulder),
